I almost hate to admit this, but I'm one of those people that likes to frequent the "self-help" section of the library. So the other day I picked up this book, Do One Nice Thing, thinking it contained daily inspiration for altruism or something. I read the introduction and was flabbergasted. You know what the challenge was? To do one nice thing a week. Really? I thought, Is our world really so dark that it's now considered remarkable or exceptional if a person possesses the capacity to do one kind thing every seven days?
But then I thought about it. Maybe I'm part of the problem. When was the last time I did something nice? I don't remember and that's a scary thought. It's so easy to watch the news and think that we're at least decent people, because we're not going around killing or seriously injuring anyone. But it's not enough to just be an innocent bystander.
"Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can." - John Wesley
